PineDrama Review (2026): Is TikTok's Drama App Really Free?

Published

PineDrama is number one in Entertainment on the US App Store, rated 4.9 from about 58,000 ratings. It's made by TikTok and passed 100 million downloads in about nine months, per Sensor Tower data reported by Chinese media. On my iPhone, I never once saw a price.

The one-star reviews describe black screens that last for weeks, coin rewards that shrink right before you can cash out, and ads in an app that launched without any. Some Android users say a subscription prompt showed up halfway through a show.

I used it on a US iPhone in October 2026, checked both store listings and TikTok's help page for advertisers, and read two months of reviews from six countries. I came away convinced the free part is real. It's TikTok's kind of free, though. You pay with ads and a TikTok account, and most of what you watch is AI.

What PineDrama Is

It's TikTok's standalone app for vertical short dramas. It slipped onto the stores in December 2025, and TechCrunch covered it in January, when it was only in the US and Brazil.

Indonesia and Brazil made up 82% of downloads through July. So the loudest complaints, about coins and dubbing, come from markets where the app works differently than in the US.

It's on the App Store in 13 countries, including the US, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. It isn't available in the UK, Canada, India or any EU country I checked.

The app is TikTok minus the dancing. There's a vertical feed, plus a Discover tab with search, genre chips like High society and Urban life, and posters with view counts.

Shows are posted by accounts you can follow, many of them TikTok's own drama channels. There's no catalog page, and nobody outside TikTok seems to know how many shows it has.

There's no web version. shortdrama.tiktok.com, once TikTok's drama site, is now just a download page. pinedrama.com isn't TikTok's at all; someone registered the name, so don't download anything from it.

Is PineDrama Really Free?

On a US iPhone, yes. I found no membership page or subscribe button anywhere, the Profile tab included. I watched The Professor's Obsession to episode 58 of 59 without a lock or a pop-up.

The App Store lists no in-app purchases, which is rare for this kind of app. ReelShort and ShortMax both fill all ten slots, as I found when I compared those two.

Android is murkier. Google Play shows an "In-app purchases" label ($2.99 to $199.99 per item in the US), and paywall complaints have piled up since September:

  • "It has begun charging after I begin watching the story." (US, October 12)
  • "Now you have to pay to watch certain shorts." (US, September 27)
  • A Brazilian reviewer had to pay at episode 16 of 64: "e já tinha que pagar." (September 14)
  • Reviews from Indonesia (September 21, October 10), Mexico (October 2) and Thailand describe VIP locks or subscribe prompts.

I can't tell you who's doing the charging. TikTok hasn't announced a subscription, no outlet has reported one, and Chinese coverage of the business model mentions only ads and coins.

TikTok could be testing a paid tier on Android, or uploaders could be locking their own shows. Some people may also be tapping an ad between episodes (many are for other apps) and subscribing to something else without noticing.

Unstar, a review-analysis site, found that about 15% of 69 negative US reviews were about subscriptions or account trouble, so this is more than a handful of people.

If you're on Android and see a charge, open Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions. It shows which app is billing you, and you can cancel there.

So I'd call it free on iPhone and free for most people on Android, with a growing pile of exceptions nobody has explained.

What About Ads?

Yes, and TikTok says so itself. Its advertiser help page, updated in September 2026, says the PineDrama placement is "included by default," with ads in the For You feed, the drama tab and "between episodes."

The ads run in the US, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, and push app installs, sign-up forms and sales. Neither store listing mentions ads, and Google Play has no "Contains ads" label.

In January, TechCrunch called the app ad-free. Since then:

  • Late June: "They added ads to PineDrama, which is not a surprise" (r/CShortDramas).
  • August 25: "The ads every five episodes went from 5-7 secs to 15."
  • September: ads that used to swipe away now "force lock you" for one to two minutes.
  • Late September: "Pine Drama is now like all the others" (r/Vertical_Dramas).

I didn't see a single ad, which surprised me, so it must vary by person or country. A US reviewer still reports "very few ads," while an Indonesian one says every episode has one. On Reddit this month, someone wrote, "It seems I can swipe up to pass the ads."

PineDrama also advertises heavily inside other apps, often with clips from shows you then can't find in PineDrama.

Can You Earn Money From the Coins?

Not on a US iPhone; there's no rewards page. Coins exist mostly on Android in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

They're the main reason people there give it five stars, because it does pay out, though very little.

MarketRate users reportLimits
Brazil30,000 points = R$130 ads of 30 seconds earn 108 points
Mexico30,000 coins = 1 peso3,000 coins a day at most
Thailand30,000 points = 1 baht10 baht per withdrawal, once a day
Vietnam1,000 to 2,000 dong a day10,000 dong per withdrawal

At the Brazilian rate, one real (under 20 US cents) takes about 69 hours of ads. Under Mexico's daily cap, one peso takes ten days.

And it pays less over time:

  • The first week pays well. Then rewards shrink near the cash-out threshold or after your first withdrawal: "dari 3600 jadi 360" (3,600 to 360) in Indonesia, 16,000 points down to about 100 in Vietnam.
  • Wait timers of 10 to 20 minutes show up between batches of ads.
  • In Indonesia and Vietnam, several people say the earning page vanished after their first withdrawal.
  • Rates vary by person. One Indonesian reviewer said their sister got 80 coins an ad while they got 1.

Some iPhone users in Brazil and Indonesia say only Android can withdraw. Vietnamese users had to photograph their national ID card to cash out.

I couldn't find a single US Redditor who'd been paid (this October 5 thread has no success stories). At best, the coins add up to pocket change.

What You'll Watch

Mostly AI. Every poster on my Discover tab looked AI-made, including the top show, The mob boss spoils his pregnant wife (458.9 million views, 43 episodes). It has that glossy, too-smooth look, and in weaker shows the voices are flat.

"almost every story is AI and it's not even decent, it's all monotone," a US reviewer wrote in August. A Reddit comment with 12 upvotes: "Your ai slop bores me. Give me real actors."

I run a site about AI dramas, so I don't mind AI shows. What bugs me is that PineDrama doesn't label them. Discover filters by genre only, so you find out a few seconds in.

Real-actor exclusives exist if you dig. Issa Rae's company Hoorae made Screen Time, 27 one-minute episodes that premiered April 29 and drew nearly 75 million views in the first week (TheWrap). Viewers praised the acting and, pointedly, the lack of AI.

Next is The Compatibility Experiment, a Love Island-style show with a $1 million prize, starring Loren Lott and Tajh Bellow. It premieres tomorrow, October 14, only on TikTok and PineDrama (Daytime Confidential via Yahoo).

The Daily Dot reports that PineDrama shares suppliers with TikTok's in-app drama section, including Stardust TV, ShortMax and Dreame. None of them has confirmed it.

Shows are dubbed automatically. The English dubbing I heard was good.

Outside English, dubbing is the biggest complaint after coins. Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian viewers want the original audio with subtitles and can't get it:

  • "Setting the app language to Thai automatically forces Thai dubbing, leaving no option to keep the original Chinese audio with Thai subtitles." (Thailand)
  • "99% người xem không cần AI thuyết minh," 99% of viewers don't need AI narration. (Vietnam)
  • Some shows switch language halfway through, or give characters local names.

People get around it by setting the app language to English, which brings back the original audio with English subtitles.

A few shows I opened had blurred patches, and one reviewer noticed that "some series block out kissing scenes." It's rated 13+, after all. For steamier stuff, see the spiciest 18+ vertical dramas this month.

Common Problems

Roughly in order of how often they come up.

The black screen is the big one. People get stuck on a "we're working on new content" screen for weeks; one US iPhone user said it had been "a couple months." Some say it started after they entered their age. Unstar counted it in about 30% of negative reviews.

Unfinished shows come next. "ONE COMMENTER ON PART 44 OF THE STORY SAID THE REST OF THE STORY IS ON TIKTOK," one reviewer wrote. It's the most-liked complaint in Indonesia and Mexico.

A lot of people install PineDrama to finish a show they saw in an ad, then can't find it. "Searching for the title or plot from the ad yields zero results," says a Google Play review with 22 likes, and this Reddit thread says the same.

There's no share link either. One Redditor recommending a show could only say "if you scroll through you'll find it eventually."

Reddit users found two fixes:

  • Search under the Videos tab, not the Dramas tab the search opens on (r/Askshortdramas).
  • If you saw the clip on TikTok, favorite it there. It shows up in your PineDrama favorites.

Updates break things too. Version 46.5.3 in mid-August stopped videos playing for days in several countries, and coin claims have thrown "something went wrong" errors since late August. Age checks fail for some adults; a Mexican reviewer who's 34 couldn't get through.

People also keep asking for landscape auto-play, a quality setting, downloads and picture-in-picture.

Unstar calls the app legit, and I agree. It grew faster than it could keep up with, but none of this looks like a scam.

Your TikTok Account Comes With It

I signed up with email, but there's a TikTok account underneath (Epidemic Sound says you need one). Brave Parenting, a parents' guide, says Google and Facebook sign-ins also go through TikTok, with privacy and account settings shared.

So if your TikTok account gets banned or deleted, PineDrama and your coins go with it, as some reviewers found out.

If you don't use TikTok, deleting your account is a pain. "I CAN'T [delete my account] because this app is linked to TIKTOK AND I don't have TIKTOK," a US reviewer wrote on October 7.

The age rules don't match either. The stores say 13+ and Teen, but TikTok's support page, as Epidemic Sound quotes it, says 18+.

PineDrama vs ReelShort and DramaBox

PineDrama wins on price, but you watch whatever the feed serves. Much of it is AI, and some of it never ends.

If you'd rather pay for the ending, I've broken down the prices in my DramaBox review and ReelShort vs ShortMax comparison. For more options, see my list of apps like ReelShort.

Is PineDrama Worth It?

It's legit. TikTok makes it, and both stores name TikTok as the developer.

For most people it's free. On Android, check Google Play's subscriptions page now and then; there are too many paywall reports to ignore, and they're too vague to pin on TikTok.

Install it if you don't want to pay for short dramas, or you already spend your evenings on TikTok. In Indonesia, Brazil or Thailand, the coins are a fun side game if you know how small the payouts are.

Skip it if AI dramas put you off, or you need to know a show finishes before you start. Same if you don't want another app tied to your TikTok account. In the UK or Canada, you can't get it anyway.

ReelShort and DramaBox make money when you pay to finish a show. PineDrama makes money when you keep scrolling. That's why it's free right now. It's also why the ads keep getting longer and the feed keeps filling up with cheap AI shows.
